About Connie D'Angelo

Connie is one of the most senior female criminal defence lawyers in Canada, having been called to the Bar of Ontario in February, 1993. She has over 32 years of experience in the successful defence of some of the highest profile cases in Canada and Ontario, often navigating intense media and public scrutiny relating to these clients. These cases have included politicians, police officers, athletes, celebrities, and regulated professionals. Connie has extensive and exceptional experience in the defence of drinking and driving cases (DUI), motor vehicle fatalities, homicides, drug offences, white collar crime, sexual offences, offences of violence, breach of trust and obstruction of justice, property offences, and representing police officers charged criminally and/or with disciplinary offences, as well as advising police officers in the course of investigations conducted by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Connie has unique experience in the representation of police officers. As a result of this experience, Connie is well-versed in the areas of police/law enforcement training, investigative protocols and procedures, police use of force, and the policies, legislation and caselaw that govern police conduct in the discharge of their powers and duties, and interactions with the public. She has a formidable ability and skill-set to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the prosecution's case, and critically evaluate the police investigation. These skills together with her legal knowledge, enables her to provide strategic analysis from the start and a comprehensive and thorough approach to the defence of her clients. Connie's understanding of social context and its interconnection with the criminal justice system, enables her to also be insightful of the needs, problems and challenges that confront many of the people who are criminally charged. As a first generation Italian-Canadian, and active community volunteer, she is acutely aware of the social, financial and racial barriers, along with the mental health and addiction challenges that many struggle with in our diverse community of today. Connie is also very passionate about representing Indigenous persons in light of the injustices they have experienced from the residential school system, including its intergenerational effects. She also volunteers as a lawyer supervisor for Pro Bono Students Canada, Odawa and Indigenous Persons Court program, and volunteers as a mentor for the University of Ottawa law school. In light of her commitment to access to justice, Connie also accepts Legal Aid certificates. She is also the very proud Vice-President of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa (DCAO), and a proud member of the following Canadian based legal associations: the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa (DCAO), the Criminal Lawyers Association (CLA), Women in Canadian Criminal Defence (WiCCD), Law and Mental Disorder Association (LAMDA), Leeds and Grenville Law Association; and the following American based legal associations: DUI Defense Lawyers Association (DUIDLA), National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (NACDL), and the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD).

Written by Jonathan Dichter The Heart of Client Care: Moving Beyond Case Management In the legal profession, we often talk about "case management" - the systems and processes that keep our cases moving efficiently. But what about *client care*? True client care goes beyond deadlines and filings; it's about treating clients as *people*-scared, uncertain, and in need of guidance. And when done...

Personal Contact: Using the Officer's Observations Against Them

03/10/2025

Written by Charles GoodwinEdited by Michelle Behan and Steven Hernandez The typical DUI investigation has three phases. It begins with the vehicle in motion and focuses on driving patterns that officers are trained might indicate impairment. Next is personal contact, where the officer will observe physical manifestations that are also purportedly correlated with alcohol ingestion and impairment. Finally, the officer will...
