About Barbara Elizabeth Ungar
Barbara Ungar, Esq., has been an attorney for over 35 years in the practice of law with extensive criminal litigation, municipal court and DWI/DUI representation. Ms. Ungar was admitted to practice before the state and federal courts in New Jersey and before the United States Court of Appeals (Third Circuit) in 1988. She formerly served in government practice as an Assistant Essex County Counsel from 1988 to 1990 and as a Deputy Attorney General with the Division of Criminal Justice from 1990 to 1999. Ms. Ungar has been engaged in the private practice of law since 1999 for almost 25 years providing aggressive and dedicated representation to those charged with criminal indictable offenses, disorderly persons offenses, DWI/DUI and traffic offenses and related family court proceedings and in chancery, probate and guardianship proceedings. Ms. Ungar has extensive knowledge in the mental health and related substance abuse/addictions disorders and mental health defenses to those charged with criminal offenses, municipal court offenses and DWI/DUI. Ms. Ungar has provided representation in hundreds of cases involving criminal indictable offenses in the Superior Courts and in traffic offenses and DWI/DUI in the municipal courts from complaint through motions practice to trial. Ms. Ungar is the past Chair of the Municipal Court Practice Section for the New Jersey State Bar Association for two terms and the past Criminal Law Section for the New Jersey State Bar Assocation. Ms. Ungar chaired the Judicial Independence Subcommittee for the Municipal Courts, which held hearings as to the independence of the municipal courts. Ms. Ungar has lectured extensively for the New Jersey State Bar Association and New Jersey ICLE over the last 10 years on topics that included municipal court representation, DWI arrests and field sobriety check points, hot topics in municipal court, ethics in municipal court and DWI trials. Ms. Ungar is a current member and past trustee of the Middlesex County Bar Association and an active member of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association and the Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey. Ms. Ungar is a current and active member of the New Jersey Bar Association's Municipal Court Practice Section, Solo and Small Firm Section, Women in the Profession Section, Elder and Disability Law Section and Wellness Committee. Ms. Ungar won an appeal in the Appellate Division concerning PTI admission for an individual charged with a second degree gun possession offense with an unpublished opinion in State v. Brian Gundy, Docket No. A-4102-14T2 in 2016. Ms. Ungar participated as Amicus on behalf of the New Jersey State Bar Association in State v. James Denelsbeck, 225 N.J. 103 (2016) on the issue of jury trial rights in DWI third and subsequent offenses in New Jersey decided by the New Jersey Supreme Court. Ms. Ungar is a current member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National College for DUI Defense.
